Complete list of the 47 counties in kenya


If you finished your high school education earlier than 2010 (like me), then you never got to learn about the counties in Kenya. This is because the counties came in with the promulgation of the new constitution, which happened in 2010.

If that is the case, then we present to you a list of the 47 counties in Kenya. This list includes the county code, county capital and also the names of the sub-counties that constitute the county.

  1. Mombasa is one of 47 counties in Kenya, with county code 001. The county is located in the country's southeast. Mombasa was one of Kenya's oldest regions until being re-established as a county on the same borders in 2013. It is Kenya's smallest district, with a total size of 212.5 square kilometers. According to the Kenya census statistics from 2019, the population is 1,208,333  with a population density of 5686 people per square kilometer.

     Likoni, Kisauni, Nyali, Changamwe, Mvita and Jomvu make up the six (6) sub-counties that comprise the county. A further 30 wards are created from these.


  2. 2 Kwale

    Bearing code 002, Kwale is a county in Kenya  in the  southernmost region. Although Ukunda is the county's largest town, Kwale is its capital. Kwale county covers an area of 8,270 square kilometers. According to County data from 2019, the population is 866,820 with a population density of 105  people per square kilometre.

     Matuga, Lungalunga, Kinango and Msambweni make up the four (4) sub-counties that comprise the county. A further 20 wards are created from these.

  3. 3 Kilifi

    Kilifi is one of 47 counties in Kenya. It bears county code 003. The county is located in the country's southeast. It was formed in 2010 by the merging of the Kilifi and Malindi regions. Kilifi is the capital, while Malindi is the largest town. Kilifi County has 12,255 square kilometers in size. According to the national census data from 2019, the population is 1,453,787 people, with a population density of 119 people per square kilometre.

     Ganze, Kilifi North, Kilifi South, Malindi, Kaloleni, Rabai and Magarini make up the seven(7) sub-counties that comprise the county. A further 35 wards are created from these.

  4. 4 Tana River

    Tana River is one of Kenya's 47 counties. It bears code 004 and is located in the country's southeastern region. The county's name was derived from River Tana, which cuts through the county on its way to the Indian Ocean. Hola is the county's largest town and is also the capital. Tana River county covers 35,375.8 square kilometers. The county has a population of 315,943 people (according to the 2019 census figures) and a population density of 9 people per square kilometre. 

    Tana River county is made up of Tana Delta, Tana River and Tana North sub counties. These sub counties are then subdivided into 15 electoral wards.

  5. 5 Lamu

    Bearing county code 005, Lamu is one of the 47 counties in Kenya. The county is located in the country's southeast. The county consists of 65 islands and mainland which constitute the Lamu Archipelago. The capital of Lamu County is the town of Lamu. The county spans 6,497.7 square kilometers. According to the 2019 national census data, the county's population is 143,920, translating to a population density of 22 people per square kilometer.

    Lamu  county is made up of Lamu East and Lamu West sub counties. These sub counties are then subdivided into 10 electoral wards.

  6. 6 Taita Taveta

    Taita-Taveta is one of 47 counties in Kenya. The county is situated in the south of the country. It is around 150 kilometers northwest of Mombasa and 300 kilometers southeast of Nairobi. Although the capital is technically in Mwatate, the county's administration offices are in Wundanyi. The county spans 17,083.9 square kilometers. It has a population of 340,671 people and a population density of around 20 people per square kilometer, according to the 2019 national censsu figures. 

    The official county code for Taita Taveta is 006.

    Taita Taveta county is made up of Mwatate, Taveta, Wundanyi and Voi sub counties. These sub counties are then subdivided into 20 electoral wards.

  7. 7 Garissa

    Garissa (county code 007) is one of 47 counties in Kenya. The county is located in the country's northeast. Garissa, a town of the same name, is the capital and major urban area. The county covers 45,720 square kilometers. It has a population of 841,353 people and a population density of 18 people per square kilometre, according to 2009 national census figures.

    Garissa county is made up of Fafi, Garissa, Ijara, Lagdera, Dadaab, Balambala and Hulugho sub counties. These sub counties are then subdivided into 30 electoral wards.

  8. 8 Wajir

    Wajir is one of 47 counties in Kenya. It is located in the country's northeast. Its capital and largest urban area is the identically named Wajir town. The county covers 55,840 square kilometers. According to 2019 national census data, the county's population is 781,263, with a population density of roughly 14 people per square kilometer. The official county code for Wajir is 008.

    Currently, the County is divided into six (6) sub-counties namely Wajir East, Tarbaj, Wajir West, Eldas, Wajir south  and Wajir North. These are further divided into 30 wards.

  9. 9 Mandera

    Mandera (county code 009) is one of 47 counties in Kenya.The county is in the country's northeastern region. Mandera, a town with the same name, serves as the capital and main urban area. The county has a total land area of 25,797 square kilometers. It has a population of 867,457 people and a population density of 40 people per square kilometer, according to 2019 national census figures.

    Currently, the County is divided into six (6) sub-counties namely Lafey, Mandera South, Mandera East, Mandera North, Mandera West  and Banissa. These are further divided into 30 wards.

  10. 10 Marsabit

    Marsabit is one of 47 counties in Kenya. It bears county code 010 and  is located in the northwestern region of the nation. Although Moyale is the county's largest town, Marsabit is its capital.  According to 2019 figures, the county spans 66,923 square kilometers and has a population of 459,785 people, translating to a population density of approximately 7 people per square kilometer.

    Marsabit county is made up of Laisamis, Saku, North Horr and Moyale sub counties. These sub counties are then subdivided into 20 electoral wards.
